Beginning Mixed Media - Fall 1

If you are just learning how to paint, or you’ve got some painting experience and are curious about introducing elements of collage, textures, pattern, image transfer, and trying out a variety of tools for mark making, drawing, and experimenting, this is a good place to start. Each week the instructor will introduce a new technique to explore, and will provide many of the materials for students to “try on” before investing in supplies beyond the basic supply list. See the Basic Supply List below.

Basic Supply List

  • Paper for each class - either a pad or individual sheets of Bristol Board or Vellum, Rives BFK paper at least 250 gsm, or another heavy paper that can withstand layers of paint and collage, at least 12x18”.  

  • Pencils, graphite, water soluble and non-water soluble

  • Eraser and ruler

  • Ink Pen (black and any other colors you want to use)

  • Micron or other fine point marker (black and any other colors you like) 

  • Black India Ink

  • Crayons, oil pastels, chalk pastels

  • Brushes for ink and paint - whatever sizes you like to work with

  • Gesso

  • Acrylic Paint - at least primary colors and black and white, plus any other colors you want to bring(an inexpensive option I like is Blick Matte Acrylics)

  • GAC-100, 200 or another fluid medium in matte, semigloss or gloss

  • Water Spray Bottle and a container for water

  • Palette or Palette Paper

  • Paper towels

  • Scissors, Xacto knife

  • Glue stick, ModPodge or PVA glue

  • Masking Tape (ideally painters removable tape)

  • Stencils 

    Extras:

  • Any collage papers you would like to use - handmade paper, patterned paper from an art or craft store, magazine pages, tissue paper, newspaper, old book pages, kraft paper, etc.
