***NEW*** This course introduces registrants to zine culture and the creative practice of self-publishing. Through hands-on projects, registrants will learn different methods for conceptualizing, designing, and producing original zines. Topics will cover zine history, zine aesthetics, materials and techniques, binding methods, photocopying/printing, and distribution. Registrants will gain practical skills in creative writing, visual art, graphic design, bookbinding, print production, and promotion as they complete their own zines.
Course Objectives:
Understand the historical context and cultural significance of zines
Experiment with different zine structures and binding techniques
Develop creative writing and visual art skills for zine making
Learn strategies for generating zine themes and content
Gain hands-on experience with production tools including photocopiers, scanners, bookbinding equipment
Complete multiple short zine projects utilizing a range of techniques
Produce a polished final zine project for publication and distribution
