Do you have an interest in abstract painting? Would you like to paint with more freedom or feeling? This class explores abstract expression in painting, and how to express an abstracted emotion through the use of acrylic paint.

Designed for all levels of experience with acrylic paint, students are exposed to a variety of approaches applying abstract techniques and sensibilities to the classic art of painting. In addition to in class critic we will also be looking at a variety of abstract painters and assessing the techniques utilized in their works and how those elements can be infused in our own work.

This class is designed to be repeated.

MATERIALS:

Basic Acrylic Paint: alizarin crimson, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow light, lemon or zinc yellow, prussian or pthalo blue, ultramarine blue, titanium white, ivory black Additional Colors (opt): cerulean blue, yellow ochre, burnt sienna, van dyck brown, naples yellow, permanent green light, magenta, zinc white, mars black

Brushes: an assortment of brushes in various sizes, including larger brushes; select mostly bristle brushes Palette Knife: long (~3”) metal blade, for mixing paint Mediums & Solvents: matte medium (thin), heavy gel (thick), or similar

Painting Surfaces: canvas and/or other surfaces – always have several primed in various sizes with you. (Examples: primed wood or cardboard; primed Bristol or watercolor paper; a ream of canvas paper; canvas board; stretched canvas)

Palette: large disposable wax-based palette (12x16” or larger, no hole)

Dry Media: sketch book, charcoal, pencils, pens, masking tape, etc.
