W2 - Invisible Ties: Assembling Memory into Presence

  • OPAL 720 CHICAGO AVE Oak Park, IL United States (map)

with Bethany Cordero

This class invites participants to reflect on their identity by transforming memories into layered, tactile forms through the meditative act of assemblage. Using paper, thread, wire, and needles, participants will engage in writing exercises to recall moments when they felt most like themselves. These written memories and drawings will be placed onto paper, creating fragmented pages that represent key pieces of their identity.

In the second phase, participants will hand sew these paper remnants together with fragments of personally selected textiles, forming paper/fabric quilts. These quilts will symbolize the intricate patchwork of memories and experiences that make up the self. The act of sewing becomes a meditation on how memories interconnect and evolve, as participants construct these layered assemblages to visually and conceptually represent their personal journeys. By the end of the session, each participant will have created a quilt-like panel that embodies their unique story, merging memory, material, and presence into a cohesive artwork.

This class is designed to be repeated.

Monday, 10am -12pm

Instructor: Bethany Cordero
Artist and educator Bethany Cordero explores the dynamic relationships between materiality and identity in her interdisciplinary practice. With a focus on clay, fiber, and metal, her work investigates how materials transform, decay, and adapt over time, reflecting the evolving nature of selfhood and experience. By assembling remnants and other various materials, Cordero creates sculptural forms that embody resilience and transformation, drawing on both philosophical inquiry and tactile experimentation. As a teacher, she encourages her students to engage deeply with the physical properties of materials as a way to explore personal and collective narratives.
