FUNDAMENTAL DRAWING METHODS - Fall 2 - 2023

This class is designed for those who are new to drawing or who want to improve their basic drawing skills. We will cover the fundamentals of drawing. We will also explore a variety of drawing media, including pencil, charcoal, and pastel. Students will have the opportunity to draw from observation, as well as from their imaginations.

In addition to the fundamentals of drawing, this class will also introduce you to historical and contemporary methods to observational drawing. You will learn about the different ways that artists have used perceptual measuring and 2-D modeling to create their work.

By the end of the class, students will have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of drawing and will be able to create confident and expressive drawings.

 This class is designed to be repeated.

OUTLINE:

Week 1: CONTOUR STILL LIFE

In this project you will choose a section from the still life with AT LEAST FIVE (5) objects to create a contour drawing. You will focus on line, implied line, composition. scale and proportion.

Week 2: DRAPERY DRAWING

Create a detailed pencil drawing of folded fabric using pencil to show value and form.

Week 3: SELF-PORTRAIT- SUBJECTIVE DRAWING:
EXPRESSIVE USE OF LINE, VALUE, AND TEXTURE

To create an introspective and expressive self-portrait. Employ line to create exaggeration. Express abstract, emotional or symbolic meaning through the use of value and symbolism. Enhance the visual or tactile expression through exaggeration of texture.

Week 4: FLORAL PORTRAIT

In this project, you will observe the specific details of florals you choose. Look closely of the shape of the leaves and how they lay. Carefully observe the shape of each flower and how the petals extend from its center. After your observation you will then draw a compelling and detailed floral composition.

Week 5: FULL COLOR STILL LIFE ON PAPER

For this project, you will be drawing with a full color medium, drawing from dark to light. Starting with black paper as your base, you will create a fully rendered still life drawing using soft pastels. You will choose a section from the still life with AT LEAST FIVE (5) objects to create your drawing. You will focus on shape, line, implied line, composition. scale and proportion.

1- 12x9 in “SKETCH” pad (mixed media)

Professional drawing pencil set (a set that contains a variety of B and H pencils) 

1- Compressed white charcoal pencil 

2- Pack of “SOFT” Compressed black charcoal  

1-Black Charcoal pencil  

1-kneaded eraser

1-stick eraser (Tombow Mono Zero Refillable Eraser) 

Blending stumps 

Hand-held sharpener/Box cutter 

1-Soft pastel set 

1-Plastic eraser 

1-12in. Ruler 

1-24in. Ruler 

1 can Krylon Spray fixative
