Watercolor Basics

Appropriate for all levels of students, learn various techniques using wet and dry pigments.

In this class, students will be introduced to various techniques of how to successfully work with watercolor paints. Focusing on architectural renderings, still life and figurative work, students will gain an understanding how to work with wet and dry paints. This class is appropriate for students of all skill levels and is meant to be repeated as individual attention will be given to each student. Required materials are listed at the bottom of this page.

Required Material List

  • Paper 

    • Arches 140 lb. watercolor block paper (cold press with the green cover) 10 x 14 min. size.

    • Optional: 22 x 30 full sheets (cold press) cut down to quarter sizes.

  • Brushes 

    • 1” flat brush

    • #8 and #14 round brush (Dick Blick Masterstroke series is good. So is Simmons)

  • Paints

    • Brands: Primaries (warms and cools) plus some earth tones. Winsor & Newton, Holbein, Daniel Smith, Cheap Joe’s, American Journey, brands are recommended.

    • Blues:  Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue 

    • Yellows: Lemon Yellow, Yellow Ochre 

    • Reds: Scarlet Lake or Winsor, Alizarin Crimson, Rose Madder 

    • Earth tones: Burnt Siena, Sepia, Payne’s Gray

    • Green: Viridian Green 

  • Other Items

  • Sally’s Graphite transfer paper for tracing

  • Foam core or panel board for taping paper to

  • Large plastic palette with individual paint wells and a large area for mixing

  • Large container for water.

  • #2 pencil

  • Paper towels

  • Masking tape or clips for holding down paper.

  • Small Spray bottle

  • Salt - Rock salt, kosher or table salt.
