This is a judged exhibition.
Art and music have a deep and resonating relationship. And the creative process of either can be affected by the other. Disciplines of visual art and music share elements such as repetition, variety, intensity, rhythm, dialogue, balance and unity. Both art and music can represent the way one feels or experiences life. When art and music collide, they can create a sensory symphony.
Artists are invited to submit up to two pieces of work that represent their understanding of how visual art and music work together (or not). All mediums will be accepted. (drawing, painting, mixed media, digital/new media, printmaking, photography, ceramics, fiber, glass, sculpture).
Artists submitting film or video, please inquire about our available projection system.
Work shall not exceed 48” in the largest dimension.
All work must be ready to hang with wire and no sawtooth hangers will be accepted.
All work should have been completed in the past three years and not previously exhibited at OPAL. Please bring work to the Oak Park Art League at 720 Chicago Avenue in Oak Park, IL.
Judge: Felicia Grant Preston
Felicia Grant Preston is a retired art instructor, avid art collector, and visual artist. Preston received a BA in art from Southern Illinois University in 1976, an MS ED from Northern Illinois University in 1979, and an MA from Chicago State University in 2003. In addition, she has studied at the University of Illinois, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Governor State University and The Savannah College of Art and Design. Her work has been included in the Paul R. Jones collection at the University of Delaware, considered one of the largest collections of African American art. Publications include the University of Delaware’s 2005 date book, Abstract and All That, University of Delaware exhibition catalogue, African art: the Diaspora and beyond by Daniel T. Parker, Cover design for Mystic turf poems by Quraysh Ali Lansana, and one image in Revise the Psalm: Work Celebrating the Writing of Gwendolyn Brooks, Edited by Quraysh Ali Lansana, and Sandra Jackson-Opoku, 2016.
Preston’s work has been exhibited in Chicago at the Museum of Science and Industry’s Black Creativity exhibition, A.R.C. Gallery, Woman Made Gallery, R.H. Love Contemporary Gallery, Artemisia Gallery, Hyde Park Art Center, South Side Community Art Center, Beacon Street Gallery, Nicole Gallery, The South Shore Cultural Center, Neleh Artistic Expressions and Guichard Gallery to name a few. She has also exhibited at Fort Wayne Museum of Art Alliance, in Fort Wayne Indiana, Vaughn Cultural Center in St. Louis Missouri, The Art Exchange Gallery in Detroit Michigan, The Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah Georgia, Florida Community College in Jacksonville Florida, Art Jazz Gallery in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, the Duluth courthouse in Duluth Minnesota and in numerous private collections.
Cost per submission:
Members: $20 first piece, $15 second piece.
Non-members $30 first piece, $20, second piece.
All work will be accepted into this open call show.
Drop off work: July 29th, 30th and 31st
Exhibition dates: August 3rd - 26th
Opening reception: Friday, August 13th, 7-9PM.
Pick up work: August 27th, 28th and 31st.
