Space to Breathe: An Abstract Exhibition

“There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.” - Pablo Picasso

Art unfolds and reveals itself in time and layers, needing space to develop and grow.
We all have our distinct views on the outer world, and through non-objective art expression - we obtain a glimpse into our innermost perceptions.  This is a call for work in any media that best represents the artist's understanding and practice of the visual language of shape, form, color, texture, line and composition without the dependence of a visual reference. We are looking for work that does not suggest a place, being or object, but communicates with the viewers in an attempt to understand “reality”,  and tells a story of process and intangible ideas.

Size is limited to 48” in its largest dimension.

Two submissions per artist.

All work must be ready to hang.  No sawtooth hangers will be accepted.

Bring all submissions to our gallery at 720 Chicago Ave. Oak Park, IL 60302

All work must have been created in the past 3 years and not previously exhibited at OPAL.

Judge: Danny Floyd

Danny Floyd is an artist, researcher, curator, and educator based out of Chicago. At the risk of confusion, his work seeks the narrow threshold between meaning and nonsense in text and images. He embraces divergent thinking through improvisation and the delightfully weird. He is the Exhibitions Director for ACRE and a Lecturer of Visual & Critical Studies and Sculpture at SAIC. Since 2013, he has been an active part of Chicago's artist-run space community through two programs, Ballroom Projects and Adler & Floyd. He has held curatorial residencies with ACRE and Chicago Artists Coalition. He was also awarded the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation Curatorial Fellowship in 2017.
