with Bethany Cordero
In this one-day workshop, participants will explore identity and memory through the meditative process of assemblage. Using a variety of materials such as paper, watercolors, thread, wire, and textiles, they will transform personal memories into layered, tactile forms. This hands-on workshop encourages participants to choose and focus on the elements that resonate most with them as they create quilt-like panels representing their unique stories. By the end of the workshop, each participant will have created a personal quilt-like assemblage that merges memory and material into a cohesive, symbolic artwork.
*Students are encouraged to bring with them items that could be transformed or used during this session: think poignant journal entries, copies of relevant books passages, photographs or other materials that could be physically incorporated into the assemblage. We do not have a copier so please make duplicates if you are more comfortable using those instead of originals.
Instructor: Bethany Cordero
Artist Bethany Cordero explores the relationships between materiality and identity in her interdisciplinary practice. With a focus on clay, fiber, and metal, her work investigates how materials transform, decay, and adapt over time, reflecting the evolving nature of selfhood and experience. By assembling remnants and other various materials, Cordero creates sculptural forms that embody resilience and transformation, drawing on both philosophical inquiry and tactile experimentation. As a teacher, she encourages her students to engage deeply with the physical properties of materials as a way to explore personal and collective narratives.
