Botanical Gel Plate Workshop

with Jackie Lakely

Saturday, October 5, 10:00 am-4:00 pm

If you are new to gel plate printing or have some experience, this workshop will include a series of lessons and demonstrations that will take you from the basics to multi-layered botanical prints that you can build into beautiful mixed media pieces by the end of the day. Gel plates are so fun and can be used in so many ways in your artwork! It is truly opening a door to a new world of creating. We will use a variety of seasonal botanicals as our subject matter, for coherence of theme and the flexibility they will give us in creating realistic or abstract prints and pieces. We will also utilize stencils, stamps, magazine papers, and drawing with chalk and oil pastels, supplied by the instructor.

The instructor will also supply the gel plates, brayers, and a series of papers we will be working with, from tissue paper to giant coffee filters to rice paper to high quality printing paper. We will start with small 6”x6” plates, move to larger 8”x10” - 12”x12” plates, and even do a few prints using 16”x20” plates, so you can experience the large range of possibilities. Students will be responsible for bringing your own paints, drawing tools, paper towels, brushes, medium, and scissors (see below for detailed supply list).

This is a six hour workshop, so please feel free to bring lunch and plan to take a 30 minute break around 12:30. You are welcome to bring beverages (non-alcoholic) and snacks as well.
