Capturing Architecture in the Landscape - Wednesdays 12:30-3:30pm

Capturing Architecture in the Landscape
Kathy Hirsh

Working from reference photographs students will learn how to approach and paint architectural structures in the landscape, articulating a combination of soft and hard shapes, found and lost edges and always interesting negative space.

The first day of class, students are asked to bring their own reference materials, including digital photos or print with both architecture and landscape as subject matter. The class will meet for one short session at the nearby Cheney Mansion to learn how to use their camera to best capture reference photos to use for painting later. Using a photographic reference is a learned skill, not just slavish copying and Kathy will teach students how to interpret a photo and transform it into a unique vision through demonstrations, handouts and feedback.

Though the class will be mostly be taught in the studio, plein air principles of light and atmosphere will be emphasized. Students will use a limited palette of oils to learn to mix color, value and temperature.
